Mounjaro diet plan: what to eat and what to avoid, with a daily menu and recipes

Since your first injections you have been less hungry, and that raises new questions. What do you eat when you have hardly any appetite? What is best avoided to prevent nausea? And is there a plan you can simply follow?

Why food works differently with Mounjaro

Food works differently with Mounjaro because the active substance tirzepatide suppresses your appetite and slows the emptying of your stomach. You feel full sooner, stay full for longer and have fewer cravings for fatty and sweet food. That makes eating less easy, but it brings two risks: eating too little and eating the wrong things. You can also compare Mounjaro vs Saxenda.

Eating too little costs muscle mass and energy, and leads to shortfalls in protein, fibre and vitamins. Eating the wrong things, especially fatty and fried food, sits in a slower stomach for a long time and causes nausea and heartburn. A good eating pattern with Mounjaro prevents both.

Below you can read why food works differently with Mounjaro, what is best to eat and what to avoid, an example day and a weekly menu, recipes that are easy on the stomach, how to eat at each build-up step and how to prevent nausea. You can also read how to buy Mounjaro.

What is the best food to eat on Mounjaro?

The best food on Mounjaro consists of protein with every meal, plenty of vegetables and fibre, slow carbohydrates in small portions and plenty of water. Five basic rules:

  1. Protein first. Chicken, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, pulses and tofu. According to the Voedingscentrum (the Netherlands Nutrition Centre), protein is more filling than carbohydrates and fat and limits muscle loss while you lose weight.
  2. Vegetables and fruit with every meal. For volume, fibre and vitamins without many calories.
  3. Keep your fibre up. The Voedingscentrum's fibre recommendation is at least 24 grams per day for women and 30 grams for men; wholegrain products, pulses and vegetables help against constipation, a common side effect.
  4. Small portions, a regular rhythm. Three small meals and one or two snacks, even if you do not feel hungry.
  5. Drink plenty. At least 1.5 litres of water, tea or coffee without sugar per day.

What should you not eat on Mounjaro?

There are no forbidden foods with Mounjaro, but four groups cause complaints in most users: fatty and fried food, large portions, sugary drinks and alcohol. They are not dangerous in combination with the medicine, but they work against your goal and make the side effects worse. Read more about the Mounjaro golden dose.

Fatty food sits in a slower stomach for hours: chips or pizza give many users nausea until the next morning. Large portions cause a painfully full feeling and heartburn, because the stomach makes room less quickly. Soft drinks and juice provide calories without satiety, and fizzy drinks bloat a slower stomach.

Alcohol hits harder on an empty stomach and increases the risk of low blood sugar and nausea. What is sensible is explained in the article on Mounjaro and alcohol.

Mounjaro diet plan: an example day

An example day on Mounjaro consists of three small meals and two snacks, with protein in every meal and vegetables at lunch and dinner. See this as a template that you adapt to your own taste and your appetite on the day.

MomentExampleWhy
Breakfastquark or skyr with porridge oats and berriesprotein and fibre, small volume
Snacka handful of unsalted nuts or a boiled eggprotein, keeps you full until lunch
Lunchwholegrain wrap with chicken, hummus and plenty of raw vegetablesprotein and fibre, easy to digest
Snackvegetable soup or yoghurtfluid and protein when you have little appetite
Dinnergrilled fish or chicken, steamed vegetables, a small portion of brown rice or potatoesprotein, vegetables, slow carbohydrates
When thirstywater, tea, coffee without sugar1.5 to 2 litres per day

If you really have no appetite on a given day, leave out the carbohydrates but never the protein and vegetables. A soup, a smoothie with quark or an omelette is then easier than a full plate.

Example weekly menu on Mounjaro

You vary a weekly menu on Mounjaro around one principle: a different protein source and a different vegetable every day, within the same structure. That keeps your food varied without you having to think about it every day.

  • Monday: omelette with spinach; lentil salad; chicken breast with broccoli
  • Tuesday: quark with fruit; tuna salad on wholegrain bread; salmon with courgette
  • Wednesday: porridge with protein powder; chicken soup with vegetables; turkey meatballs with green beans
  • Thursday: skyr with berries; wrap with hummus and raw vegetables; tofu stir-fry with peppers
  • Friday: boiled eggs with tomato; leftover stir-fry; white fish with Brussels sprouts
  • Weekend: a relaxed breakfast with protein, one meal out with protein and vegetables as the basis, and one meal you cook yourself

How many calories you need varies from person to person and by phase. Never work out a strict low number yourself: eating too little slows the programme down. You can get an indication of your daily needs if you calculate your calorie needs; your doctor decides whether an adjustment makes sense.

Mounjaro recipes that are easy on the stomach

Recipes that go down well on Mounjaro are light, rich in protein and low in fat: steamed, grilled or poached instead of fried, with vegetables as the basis. Four types of recipe that many users find pleasant:

  1. Vegetable soup with chicken or lentils. One pot for three days: stock, plenty of vegetables, chicken breast or red lentils. Warm, liquid and rich in protein, ideal on days when you have little appetite.
  2. Protein smoothie. Quark or skyr, a handful of frozen fruit, a spoonful of oats and water or milk. Small volume, lots of protein, no dairy complaints if you choose low-fat dairy.
  3. Oven dish with fish and vegetables. White fish or salmon on a bed of courgette, tomato and pepper, 20 minutes in the oven with a little olive oil and lemon.
  4. Vegetable omelette. Two eggs, spinach, mushrooms and tomato. Ready in five minutes, rich in protein, and as small or large as your appetite that day.

In recipes, avoid cream sauces, cheese crusts and deep-frying. Herbs and spices are fine, but very spicy food irritates a slower stomach.

Eating at each build-up step: from 2.5 mg to your maintenance dose

Your eating pattern grows along with the Mounjaro dosing schedule. According to the product information from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), you start with 2.5 mg per week for 4 weeks, then move to 5 mg and after that increase in steps of 2.5 mg after at least 4 weeks each time. Each increase brings a few days with a higher chance of nausea. Read more about the Mounjaro KwikPen.

In the first weeks on 2.5 mg, your appetite is already lower, but your stomach is still adjusting. Eat smaller portions than you are used to, but keep to three meals. At every step up, choose extra light food for the first three to four days: soup, yoghurt, an omelette, and no fatty food.

On your maintenance dose, the pattern is usually stable: less hunger, predictable portions and few complaints. That is the moment to make your menu more complete, with enough protein and fibre for the long term. The full schedule is in the article on Mounjaro dosage; in a medical weight loss with injections programme, you discuss with your doctor how your eating pattern develops.

How to prevent nausea through your eating pattern

You prevent nausea on Mounjaro mainly by eating small amounts, slowly and with little fat, and by stopping in time. According to apotheek.nl, the patient information website of the Dutch pharmacists' organisation KNMP, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are the most common side effects, especially at the start and after a dose increase.

  • Eat slowly and stop as soon as you feel full, even if your plate is not empty.
  • If you feel nauseous, choose dry and plain food: crackers, rusks, rice, banana, ginger tea.
  • Avoid fatty, fried, very sweet and very spicy food in the first days after an increase.
  • Drink in small sips between meals, not large amounts during meals.
  • Do not lie down straight after a meal; that makes heartburn worse.

If the nausea lasts longer than a few weeks, if you can no longer eat or drink, or if you get severe abdominal pain, call your doctor. Which complaints are to be expected and which are not is explained in the article on Mounjaro side effects.

Frequently asked questions about the Mounjaro diet

How many calories should you eat on Mounjaro?

That varies from person to person and depends on your height, weight, age and activity. There is no fixed number; a strict low calorie intake actually slows the programme down. Use your reduced hunger as a guide, eat three small meals with protein and vegetables and discuss a specific goal with your doctor.

What is a good weekly menu for losing weight?

A weekly menu with a different protein source every day (fish, chicken, egg, pulses, dairy), plenty of vegetables, wholegrains in small portions and water to drink. Vary the example above to your taste; the structure stays the same.

How fast do you lose weight on Mounjaro?

You usually notice less hunger in the first 1 to 2 weeks; weight loss follows in the weeks after that and continues for months. The pace varies from person to person. The timeline is in the article how fast does Mounjaro work.

What if I am not losing weight despite Mounjaro?

First check your dose, your eating pattern (including liquid calories) and your sleep, and give each dose step at least 4 weeks. If your weight stalls, the doctor will look at it with you. The step-by-step plan is in the article on Mounjaro not working.

Can I eat snacks?

Yes, one or two small snacks a day actually help you get enough protein when your meals are small. Choose nuts, an egg, yoghurt or vegetables, not biscuits or crisps.

Does the same eating pattern apply to Ozempic?

Largely, yes: semaglutide also slows the stomach and suppresses appetite. The emphasis at each build-up step differs slightly. The nutritional advice for it is in the article on the Ozempic diet.
