How does this calculator work?

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate: the energy your body uses at rest. That figure is multiplied by a factor for your activity level. The result is your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

What do the three numbers mean?

If you eat roughly as much as you use, your weight stays the same. For losing weight, the calculator works with 500 kcal a day below your expenditure, and for gaining weight with 500 kcal above it. These are common starting points for a gradual change.

Good to know

The results are estimates based on general formulas. Individual differences in metabolism, muscle mass, medication use and health can affect the actual values. Ask a doctor or dietitian for personal advice, especially if you want to lose a lot of weight or have a medical condition.
