How weight loss injections work

Weight loss injections contain a substance that mimics GLP-1, a hormone your body makes itself. That hormone regulates your appetite and how full you feel. The medication supports you; diet and exercise remain the foundation of the programme.

A hormone your body already knows

GLP-1 is released in your gut after eating and tells your brain you have had enough. Your own GLP-1 is broken down within a few minutes, so that signal is short-lived.

The medication holds on to that signal

The active ingredient resembles GLP-1 but is broken down much more slowly. The feeling-full signal therefore stays present, including between meals. Some medicines also mimic a second gut hormone, GIP.

What you notice

You feel less hungry and constant thoughts about food become quieter. You feel full sooner, so smaller portions feel like enough. And because your stomach empties more slowly, that feeling lasts longer and you snack less between meals.
