Wegovy reviews: what users notice, from the first injection to stopping
You are considering Wegovy and want to know what others notice. Not the percentages from the studies, but the day-to-day story: how it feels, when you see something, what is disappointing.

What users report most often
Users of Wegovy most often report that their hunger has gone, smaller portions and fewer thoughts about food. The most commonly mentioned downsides are nausea, tiredness, constipation and burping, especially shortly after a dose increase. After the build-up phase, these complaints decrease for most people, while the effect on appetite remains.
The common thread in experiences: users mainly notice calm around food and less hunger, and the disappointments are nausea and tiredness in the weeks after a dose increase. Weight falls gradually and the pace varies widely from person to person. Below you can read, stage by stage, what users report, what research says about it, why progress sometimes stalls, how to weigh forums and what it costs.
Wegovy in brief: what it is and how it works
Wegovy is a weekly injection with semaglutide, the same active substance as in Ozempic, but at a higher dosage and officially registered for weight loss. Semaglutide mimics the gut hormone GLP-1: you feel full sooner, your stomach empties more slowly and your blood sugar becomes more stable.
According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Wegovy has been approved since January 2022 for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or of 27 with a weight-related condition, always alongside fewer calories and more exercise. You build up over 16 weeks from 0.25 mg to the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg per week. That schedule largely determines what you notice and when. Read more about Wegovy vs Saxenda.
What users notice in the first few weeks
In the first 4 weeks on 0.25 mg, many users already notice less appetite, but their weight often barely moves yet. The starting dose is for getting used to the medication, not for maximum effect. How quickly Wegovy works after the injection varies: some people feel full within days, others only on 0.5 or 1 mg.
| Stage | Dosage per week | What users often report | What the doctor does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 4 | 0.25 mg | less appetite, feeling full sooner, mild nausea; weight falls slightly or not at all | explains the pen, first check on side effects |
| Weeks 5 to 16 | 0.5, 1 and 1.7 mg | appetite clearly reduced, weight falls measurably; complaints peak briefly after each increase | increases every 4 weeks or keeps a step longer |
| From week 17 | 2.4 mg | stable pattern, fewer side effects; often a plateau after months | evaluates, adjusts diet and exercise |
| When stopping | tapering off in consultation | appetite returns, weight may increase | tapering plan and follow-up |
How much weight do you lose with Wegovy? Research and practice
How much weight you lose with Wegovy varies from person to person; research gives an average, not a prediction. In the STEP 1 study (NEJM, 2021), adults with overweight or obesity, without diabetes, lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight in 68 weeks with 2.4 mg of semaglutide per week, compared with 2.4% on placebo. Both groups received lifestyle support.
In practice, users report that the first months go fastest and that the pace levels off afterwards. So weight loss per month is not a fixed number: in the build-up phase it is often small, on the maintenance dose larger, and after six months smaller again. If you take the first month as your yardstick, you underestimate what the medication does later.
Positive experiences: less hunger and more calm around food
The positive experience that comes up most often is peace of mind: the constant thinking about food falls away. Users describe leaving half a plate without effort, evening snacking stopping by itself and, for the first time, being able to stick to choices that failed before.
Other frequently mentioned points:
- Satiety comes sooner and lasts longer, so smaller portions do not feel like deprivation.
- Less desire for fat, sugar and alcohol; some users lose their taste for soft drinks and snacks.
- More energy after the build-up phase, partly due to weight loss and more stable blood sugar.
- Health gains the doctor measures: lower blood pressure, better blood values, fewer joint complaints.
These experiences fit the way the medication works. Wegovy does not change what you eat; it makes eating differently achievable.
Downsides and side effects mentioned often
Negative experiences with Wegovy are almost always about the digestive system and tiredness. According to Apotheek.nl, the patient information website of the Dutch pharmacists' organisation KNMP, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting usually disappear within 4 weeks; headache and tiredness also occur.
What users and the patient information leaflet mention:
- Very common (more than 1 in 10): headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, tiredness.
- Common: burping and a bloated feeling, heartburn, dizziness, hair loss, reactions at the injection site.
- Rare: gallstones, inflammation of the pancreas.
Wegovy tiredness is a frequently searched complaint. It is usually linked to eating and drinking less in the build-up phase; enough protein, water and sleep help, and the doctor can keep you on a dose step for longer. If you have severe, persistent abdominal pain or persistent vomiting, get in touch straight away. A full overview is in our article on Wegovy side effects.
Experiences with the pen, the dosage and the dosing schedule
Experiences with the pen itself are mostly positive: the Wegovy pen is prefilled, the needle is thin and short, and the injection in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm takes a few seconds. Most users get the hang of it after two or three times and choose a fixed day and a fixed time.
The dosing schedule is where experiences diverge. People who increase every 4 weeks as scheduled usually have mild complaints; people who want to go faster or skip a step more often get nausea and do not lose weight any faster. Not everyone needs to go up to 2.4 mg: if hunger is well under control on 1.7 mg, the doctor can keep you there. The full schedule is in our article on the Wegovy dosing schedule.

Why am I not losing weight on Wegovy?
If you are not losing weight on Wegovy, there are four common explanations: you are still in the build-up phase, you still eat too much out of habit despite less hunger, your body has reached a plateau, or you respond little to semaglutide.
- Build-up phase: on 0.25 and 0.5 mg the effect is limited; only judge it on the higher doses.
- Habit and liquid calories: Wegovy suppresses hunger, not eating out of boredom or emotion; juice, alcohol and snacks all count.
- Plateau: after months of weight loss, your body adapts. That is a known pattern; the doctor then looks at diet, exercise, sleep and dosage.
- Little response: a minority lose little weight even on 2.4 mg. The doctor then discusses alternatives.
What the doctor does in each of these situations is the difference between a stand-alone prescription and supervised medical weight loss with injections. Never increase the dosage yourself.
Experiences on forums and Reddit: how reliable are they?
Forum experiences are useful for recognition, not as a yardstick. People who are very satisfied or very dissatisfied post more often than people who experience the treatment as ordinary. Reddit threads often come from the US, where dosages, prices and support are different, and reviews on sites that sell Wegovy themselves are not independent.
How to read experiences with a critical eye: look at the stage (many complaints are about the weeks after an increase), at the dose (2.4 mg says little about 0.5 mg) and at what is missing (before-and-after photos without information about diet and exercise). You see similar patterns with the other medications; also read our articles on Ozempic reviews and GLP-1 reviews, and the comparison Wegovy vs Mounjaro.
Stopping Wegovy: what people notice afterwards
After stopping, appetite returns within a few weeks and many people regain weight. Users report this and research shows it too. The Cochrane review from October 2025 concludes that weight loss with semaglutide is maintained as long as use continues, and notes that the manufacturer was involved in 17 of the 18 studies.
"Wegovy for life?" is therefore a frequently asked question. The answer is nuanced: some people taper off and keep their weight stable because they have permanently changed their diet and exercise; others need a maintenance dose. Never stop abruptly on your own initiative; discuss a tapering plan with the doctor.
What does it cost and what about reimbursement?
In the Netherlands you pay for Wegovy yourself: the medication is not included in the Dutch medicine reimbursement system (geneesmiddelenvergoedingssysteem) and basic health insurance (basisverzekering) does not reimburse it for weight loss. In 2026, Zorginstituut Nederland (the Dutch National Health Care Institute) is reassessing whether reimbursement for a limited group will become possible. The current situation is in our article on Wegovy insurance coverage; the pharmacy prices per dosage are in our article on the Wegovy price.
Only buy Wegovy through a doctor and a recognised Dutch pharmacy; how that route works is in our article on how to buy Wegovy. Qlinic does not offer Wegovy. The doctor assesses which medication suits a supervised programme; the monthly price depends on that medication and is on our page with prices for medical weight loss.
