Wegovy and alcohol: can you drink while you are taking it?
A glass of wine with dinner, a beer at a birthday: you want to know whether that is fine alongside your weekly Wegovy injection, and whether it gets in the way of your programme.

Can you drink alcohol while using Wegovy?
Yes, in moderation. Wegovy has no direct interaction with alcohol, but both affect your stomach and your blood sugar. The advice of apotheek.nl, the patient information website of the Dutch pharmacists' organisation KNMP, for all medicines containing semaglutide is: first see how you react, drink no more than 1 glass a day and drink with food.
Because Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active substance, the same advice applies. The only difference is the dose: Wegovy goes up to 2.4 mg per week, Ozempic up to 2 mg. At a higher dose the gastrointestinal symptoms are often stronger, and so is the effect of alcohol on them. The detailed explanation is in the article on Ozempic and alcohol.
Below you can read what alcohol does to your body while on Wegovy, what the risks are, what is sensible in each situation, which drink gets in the way of weight loss the least, what research says about wanting alcohol less and what else you are better off avoiding. What does alcohol do to your body while you are on Wegovy?
Alcohol works more strongly and more erratically while you are using semaglutide, because of three effects of the medicine: slower gastric emptying, less appetite and lower blood sugar. A slower stomach holds on to the alcohol for longer, making absorption unpredictable; if you eat little, you feel the effect faster and more strongly.
Alcohol also inhibits the production of glucose by your liver. On its own, semaglutide rarely causes a hypo (low blood sugar), but in combination with alcohol, eating little and possibly diabetes medication, the chance increases. A hypo (trembling, sweating, palpitations, confusion) resembles being drunk, which makes it difficult to intervene in time.
Risks of Wegovy and alcohol together
The four risks of the combination are: more nausea and gastrointestinal symptoms, dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea, low blood sugar and a stalled weight because of the calories. Alcohol irritates the stomach lining and increases acid production; in a stomach that already empties slowly, this more quickly leads to a full, nauseous feeling or heartburn.
Dehydration deserves extra attention. If you vomit or get diarrhoea after an evening of drinking, you lose a lot of fluid, and with semaglutide dehydration is a risk for the kidneys. So drink water alongside every glass of alcohol and skip alcohol if you already feel nauseous.
Call your doctor if you have severe abdominal pain radiating to your back, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration. Alcohol and semaglutide both increase the risk of inflammation of the pancreas. The full overview of side effects is in the article on Wegovy side effects.
Alcohol by situation: build-up phase, injection day and an empty stomach
What is sensible depends on the moment. During the build-up phase and on injection day, you are better off leaving alcohol alone; on a stable dose, with a meal, a single glass is fine for most users.
| Situation | Risk | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Build-up phase (first 16 weeks, after each increase) | nausea and diarrhoea get worse | no or almost no alcohol until you are stable on a dose |
| Injection day | two new triggers on one day, hard to tell apart | wait until the next day |
| Empty stomach | rapid absorption, drunk sooner, risk of a hypo | eat something with protein and fibre first |
| With nausea or diarrhoea | dehydration, strain on the kidneys | skip alcohol, drink water |
| Stable maintenance dose, with food | limited | maximum 1 glass, slowly, alternated with water |
The Wegovy dosing schedule takes 16 weeks, with an increase every 4 weeks. What that schedule looks like is in the article on the Wegovy dosing schedule.
Which alcohol fits with weight loss?
No alcohol helps with weight loss, but if you do choose to drink, a small glass of dry wine or a light beer with a meal gets in the way of your goal the least. The Voedingscentrum (the Netherlands Nutrition Centre) advises not drinking alcohol at all and gives as guideline figures an average of 88 kcal for a glass of beer and 96 kcal for a glass of wine.
| Drink (standard glass) | Calories (approx.) | Point of attention with Wegovy |
|---|---|---|
| Beer (250 ml) | 88 kcal | carbonation and volume cause a bloated feeling |
| Wine (100 ml) | 96 kcal | dry wine contains less sugar than sweet wine |
| Spirits (35 ml, neat) | about 75 kcal | high alcohol concentration on an empty stomach |
| Mixed drink or cocktail | 150 to 300 kcal | sugar makes blood sugar spike and fall |
| Alcohol-free beer or wine | 20 to 70 kcal | often high in sugar; read the label |
With a medical weight loss programme with injections, you discuss choices like these with your own doctor, who knows which dose you are on and how you have reacted so far.

Wanting less alcohol because of Wegovy: what does research say?
Many users of semaglutide report craving alcohol less, and research supports this. A database study in Nature Communications (2024) among 83,825 people with obesity found that semaglutide was associated with a 50 to 56 percent lower risk of developing or relapsing into alcohol addiction in the following year, compared with other weight loss medication. A small randomised study from 2025 saw less craving and fewer drinks per drinking day with a low dose.
The explanation probably lies in the reward system: GLP-1 receptors are also found in brain areas that regulate the pleasant feeling from eating and drinking. It is an interesting effect, but not a treatment. Wegovy is licensed for weight management, not for alcohol addiction. If you find it hard to limit your drinking, discuss it with your GP.
What else should you not eat or drink on Wegovy?
There are no forbidden foods with Wegovy, but four groups often cause symptoms or work against your goal: fatty and fried food, large portions, sugary drinks and alcohol. Fatty food stays in a slower stomach for a long time; large portions give a painfully full feeling; soft drinks and juice provide calories without satiety.
What does work well: small, protein-rich meals, plenty of vegetables and fibre, and lots of water. Because Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same substance, the same eating pattern applies. Concrete examples are in the article on the Ozempic diet.

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy and alcohol
Can I drink alcohol while using Ozempic?
Yes, in moderation; Ozempic contains the same substance as Wegovy and the same advice applies: maximum 1 glass, with food, not during the build-up phase and not on injection day. All the details are in the article on Ozempic and alcohol.
Does the same apply to Mounjaro?
Largely, yes. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a different substance that slows the stomach and curbs the appetite in the same way. You can read about the differences in the article on Mounjaro and alcohol.
Can I drink a lot in one evening if I drink nothing the rest of the week?
We advise against it. A large amount in one go carries the greatest risk of vomiting, dehydration and a hypo, and the calories count just as much. Spread it out instead, or skip it.
What do users notice about alcohol while on Wegovy?
Users generally report that one glass feels like two, that they become nauseous sooner and that they want alcohol less. What else users report about the medicine is covered in the article on Wegovy reviews.
When should I call my doctor?
If you have severe abdominal pain radiating to your back, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration (passing little urine, dizziness, dry mouth) or hypo symptoms that do not go away after eating something. And beforehand: if you have diabetes and use insulin or a sulphonylurea.
Can you become addicted to Wegovy?
No. Semaglutide does not give a high and causes no withdrawal symptoms. If you stop, your appetite returns; that is not addiction but the effect wearing off.
