Wegovy price per dose: the cost table

The price of Wegovy rises with the dose. You start low and build up over about 16 weeks to the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg per week. These are the current pharmacy prices in the Netherlands according to medicijnkosten.nl from Zorginstituut Nederland (the Dutch National Health Care Institute), at the 1 July 2026 price level:

At the maintenance dose, the price of semaglutide under the brand name Wegovy therefore comes to €184 to €234 per month, or roughly €2,200 to €2,800 per year. On top of that, allow for the pharmacy's dispensing costs and the cost of a prescribing doctor, because Wegovy is only available on prescription.

Is Wegovy covered by health insurance?

No, in 2026 Wegovy is not reimbursed from basic health insurance (basisverzekering). In July 2024, Zorginstituut Nederland issued advice not to include the medicine in the basic package, and the minister adopted that advice.

There are two reasons. There are still uncertainties about the long-term health effects, and the costs to society could rise to €1.3 billion per year. In practice, supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering) doesn't reimburse Wegovy either.

Why is Wegovy so expensive?

Wegovy is expensive because of a combination of patent protection, global demand and the absence of reimbursement. The manufacturer still holds the patent on semaglutide, so no cheaper generic version may come onto the market. At the same time, demand for the medicine has risen explosively worldwide.

Then there's the Dutch situation: because insurance contributes nothing, you feel the full price yourself. With many other medicines the insurer pays a share and the price is less noticeable. With Wegovy, every euro comes out of your own pocket.

How long does one Wegovy pen last?

One Wegovy pen lasts four weeks. Each pen contains four doses and you inject once a week. So one pen is practically equivalent to a month's supply.

Converted, you pay around €46 to €58 per week at the maintenance dose. If a pen breaks or you lose it, nobody reimburses that. So storing it carefully in the fridge literally pays off.

Wegovy costs: pharmacy or online clinic?

The pharmacy price and an online clinic's rate are not the same product. At the pharmacy you pay only for the medicine, but you always need a doctor's prescription first. A clinic charges more, but that includes medical supervision.

Wegovy or Ozempic: what is the price difference?

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active substance, semaglutide, but differ in registration and dose. Ozempic is registered for type 2 diabetes and goes up to 1 mg per week. Wegovy is registered for weight management and goes up to 2.4 mg per week. More about Wegovy vs Ozempic.

What does a complete medical weight loss programme cost?

A complete programme combines medication with structural supervision by a doctor, and you can see that reflected in the price. Frequently asked questions about the Wegovy price

How much weight do you lose per week with Wegovy?

There is no fixed number of kilos per week; weight loss with Wegovy is gradual. In the research assessed by the EMA (the European Medicines Agency), adults lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, combined with fewer calories and more exercise. The first weeks are mainly build-up weeks on a low dose.

Which is better: Ozempic or Wegovy?

There is no general answer to that; both medicines contain semaglutide. Wegovy is officially registered for weight management and has a higher maximum dose; Ozempic is a diabetes medicine. A doctor decides, based on your health and situation, which medicine is medically appropriate.

Can you buy Wegovy without a prescription?

No, Wegovy is only available on prescription through a doctor and a registered pharmacy. Providers that sell it without a prescription operate illegally and regularly supply counterfeit products with no active substance or unknown contents. That is dangerous for your health and a waste of your money.

Is Wegovy also available as a pill?

Yes, in mid-2026 a daily tablet form of Wegovy was approved in the EU. When it will be widely available in the Netherlands and what the price will be is not yet known. At the moment, Wegovy in the Netherlands is mainly available as a weekly injection pen.

Will Wegovy be reimbursed in the future?

That is uncertain. The 2024 advice not to reimburse Wegovy still stands, and there is no concrete decision to change that. For now, assume that you pay the full costs yourself, or look at a medically supervised programme with a fixed monthly price.
