Wegovy insurance in 2026: is it covered, and who comes first?
You are considering Wegovy and want to know whether your health insurance will contribute. The answer will change in the coming period, so you are looking for the current situation.

Is Wegovy covered by insurance in 2026?
No. In 2026, Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) is not included in the medicines reimbursement system (geneesmiddelenvergoedingssysteem, GVS) and is therefore not reimbursed from basic health insurance (basisverzekering), by any health insurer. Zorginstituut Nederland (the Dutch National Health Care Institute) is reassessing the medicine; only after positive advice and the minister's approval will it be included in the GVS. Read more about Wegovy dosage.
| Reimbursement route | Condition | Status September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Basic health insurance | inclusion in the GVS after advice from Zorginstituut | not reimbursed; reassessment under way |
| Supplementary insurance | depends on the policy | generally not reimbursed; check your policy conditions |
| Paying yourself | prescription from a doctor, registered pharmacy | possible; you bear the full cost |
Last checked on 22 September 2026. Changes: 16 July 2024 negative advice from Zorginstituut; 6 November 2025 start of the stepped approach; October 2026 first discussion by the Scientific Advisory Board (Wetenschappelijke Adviesraad). Why Wegovy is not simply in the basic package: the advice from Zorginstituut
In July 2024, Zorginstituut advised against reimbursing Wegovy, despite the proven weight loss. The reason: great uncertainty about the long-term health effects, about which patients benefit most and about safe tapering, plus an estimated cost of up to €1.3 billion per year if it were reimbursed for everyone with a BMI of 27 or higher and a condition.
On 6 November 2025, Zorginstituut opted for a stepped approach: Wegovy and Mounjaro will first be assessed for the groups with the highest burden of disease. In plain language: not everyone with overweight at the same time, but first the people who have the most to gain medically, and only after a lifestyle programme. The first discussion by the Scientific Advisory Board is scheduled for October 2026; a final advice will follow after that. How reimbursement of weight loss medication works in general is explained in our article on weight loss medication covered by insurance.
Who will be assessed first?
The stepped approach starts with two groups: people with a BMI of 30 or higher and a weight-related condition, and people with a BMI of 35 or higher. The condition is that they have first followed a combined lifestyle intervention (gecombineerde leefstijlinterventie, GLI). Zorginstituut estimates that this first step concerns about one million people.
The manufacturer applied for reimbursement for the full registration: adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or of 27 to 30 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. That broader group will only be considered later, if the first step shows that the health gains justify the costs. Whether Wegovy suits you medically is separate from the reimbursement question; that is for the doctor to assess.
Reimbursement per health insurer: CZ, Zilveren Kruis, VGZ and supplementary insurance
No health insurer reimburses Wegovy from basic health insurance in 2026, because the content of the basic package (basispakket) is the same for all insurers and is determined by the GVS. CZ, Zilveren Kruis, VGZ, Menzis and DSW all apply the same rule.
Supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering) also generally does not reimburse Wegovy; prescription medicines outside the GVS rarely fall under a supplementary package. Check your policy conditions and ask your insurer if in doubt. Once the GVS decision is made, it will apply to all insurers at the same time.
Can your GP prescribe Wegovy?
Yes, a GP (huisarts) may prescribe Wegovy; it is an ordinary prescription medicine. In practice, GPs are cautious with overweight without diabetes and first refer you to a lifestyle programme. A prescription from your GP also changes nothing about reimbursement: you still pay for Wegovy yourself.
How GPs deal with weight loss medication is explained in our article can my GP prescribe weight loss injections. Only buy Wegovy through a doctor and a registered Dutch pharmacy; the legal route is in our article on how to buy Wegovy.

What does Wegovy cost if you pay yourself?
If you pay yourself, you pay the pharmacy price of the pen for each dose plus the dispensing fees (terhandstellingskosten), and on top of that the doctor's costs: consultation, prescription and support. The pharmacy prices per strength, from 0.25 to 2.4 mg, are listed with a reference date in our article on the Wegovy price.
If you compare providers, look at what is included in the monthly price: only the medication, or also the doctor, the check-ups and the delivery. Qlinic does not offer Wegovy. Which medication fits in a supervised programme is for the doctor to assess; the monthly price depends on that medication and is listed on our page with medical weight loss prices.
Alternatives that are reimbursed: GLI, dietitian and liraglutide under conditions
Three routes are reimbursed from basic health insurance, each under its own conditions:
- Combined lifestyle intervention (GLI): a two-year programme covering diet, exercise and behaviour, reimbursed from a BMI of 25 with a risk factor or from 30, on referral from your GP. The GLI is also the condition for future reimbursement of Wegovy.
- Dietitian (diëtist): 3 hours per year from basic health insurance, on referral.
- Liraglutide (Saxenda and other brands): reimbursed since April 2022 for a small group with a BMI of 35 or higher with a condition, or 40 or higher, after a year of GLI and without type 2 diabetes. You can read the conditions in our article on whether Saxenda is covered by insurance at CZ and other insurers.
For type 2 diabetes, Ozempic and Mounjaro are reimbursed under conditions; for Mounjaro in obesity, the same stepped assessment is under way as for Wegovy. Read our article on whether Mounjaro is covered by insurance.
Wegovy or Ozempic: why reimbursement differs
Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same substance, semaglutide, but are registered for different conditions and therefore reimbursed differently. Ozempic is registered for type 2 diabetes and is on Appendix 2 (bijlage 2) of the GVS: reimbursed for type 2 diabetes under conditions, such as a BMI above 30 and insufficient effect from other medicines. Wegovy is registered for weight management and is not included in the GVS, according to the semaglutide product text of the Farmacotherapeutisch Kompas (the Dutch national reference for medicines), consulted September 2026.
Using Ozempic to lose weight without diabetes is off-label and is not reimbursed either. The differences between the two medicines are covered in our article Wegovy vs Ozempic.

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy insurance
When will Wegovy be covered by health insurance?
Not at the moment. Zorginstituut Nederland is reassessing Wegovy using a stepped approach; the first discussion is scheduled for October 2026. Only after positive advice and the minister's approval will the medicine be included in the GVS.
Who will benefit first from future reimbursement?
People with a BMI of 30 or higher with a weight-related condition and people with a BMI of 35 or higher, after they have followed a lifestyle programme (GLI). Whether the medicine suits you medically is for the doctor to assess.
Can a GP prescribe Wegovy?
Yes, but GPs are cautious with overweight without diabetes and usually refer you to a lifestyle programme first. A GP prescription changes nothing about reimbursement: you pay for Wegovy yourself.
Do CZ, Zilveren Kruis or VGZ cover Wegovy?
No. Basic health insurance is the same with all insurers and follows the GVS; supplementary packages generally do not reimburse Wegovy either. Check your policy conditions.
How much weight do you lose in the first month on Wegovy?
That varies from person to person, and the first month is the build-up phase with the lowest dose; the effect increases as the dose is raised. What users notice in each phase is covered in our article on Wegovy reviews.
