Wegovy pill: is oral Wegovy available in the Netherlands yet?

What exactly is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a tablet containing semaglutide, the same active substance as in the Wegovy injection, Ozempic and Rybelsus. According to the Wegovy product information, there are four strengths: 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg. You start with 1.5 mg per day and, after at least 4 weeks each time, increase to 4, 9 and eventually 25 mg, the maintenance dose.

You take the tablet once a day, whole, with a sip of water of no more than half a glass. You may not take more than one tablet a day, not even to mimic a higher dose. Because semaglutide is poorly absorbed through the stomach, the dose in milligrams is much higher than with the injection (25 mg per day compared with 2.4 mg per week); the amount that reaches your body is comparable.

Wegovy pill, Rybelsus and the injection compared

All three contain semaglutide, but they differ in licensing, dose and use. Rybelsus is the existing semaglutide tablet, licensed for type 2 diabetes; the Wegovy tablet is licensed for weight management and has a higher maintenance dose.

Side effects of Wegovy tablets: what is known?

The side effects of the Wegovy tablet resemble those of the injection: mainly nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, usually during the build-up phase. In the OASIS 4 study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 74 percent of participants on the tablet reported gastrointestinal symptoms, compared with 42 percent on placebo.

In that same study, participants with overweight or obesity lost an average of 13.6 percent of their body weight in 64 weeks with the 25 mg tablet, compared with 2.2 percent on placebo, in combination with lifestyle support. That is an average from a controlled study; results vary from person to person.

The rare serious side effects are the same as for all semaglutide medicines: inflammation of the pancreas, gallstones and the very rare eye condition NAION. When is the Wegovy pill coming to the Netherlands?

As of 22 September 2026, no exact date for the Dutch market is known. The European licence is in place; the manufacturer has announced that it will introduce the tablet in the first markets outside the United States in the second half of 2026. Whether the Netherlands is one of them, and at what price, has not yet been decided.

Do not count on reimbursement: the Wegovy injection is not covered by basic health insurance (basisverzekering) when used for weight loss, and no different decision is known for the tablet. Buying Wegovy pills: why you need to be careful right now

As long as the Wegovy tablet is not available through Dutch pharmacies, any website selling "Wegovy pills" is by definition unreliable. The Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd (IGJ, the Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate) warns against fake online pharmacies that offer prescription medicines without a prescription: the products often contain too much, too little or no active substance, and a wrong dose can be life-threatening.

Even once the tablet is available, the route remains the same as for any semaglutide medicine: a doctor assesses you, writes a prescription, and a registered Dutch pharmacy supplies it. Which weight loss pills can you get through a doctor now?

At the moment there are two tablets in the Netherlands that a doctor can prescribe for overweight: Rybelsus (semaglutide, licensed for type 2 diabetes, off-label for weight loss) and Mysimba (naltrexone with bupropion, licensed for weight management). In addition, orforglipron, a non-peptide GLP-1 tablet, is in development.

Afraid of needles? These are your options

Fear of needles is a common reason to look for a pill, but in practice most people find the weekly injection easier than expected. The needle is short and thin, the injection goes into the fat under the skin of the abdomen or thigh and takes a few seconds. Many users who dreaded injecting beforehand call it routine after two weeks.
