How the legal route works: from consultation to home delivery

The legal route to Ozempic consists of four steps: a medical check, a consultation with a doctor, the prescription with home delivery, and a supervised treatment. At Qlinic you go through these steps online, at your own pace, with one regular doctor.

1. Eligibility check. You fill in a short medical questionnaire online. This shows us whether medical weight loss with GLP-1 medication suits your situation. It takes a few minutes and commits you to nothing.
2. Consultation with a BIG-registered doctor. You speak to our own doctor (BIG-registered: the BIG register is the Dutch register of healthcare professionals), one-to-one. The doctor goes through your health, medication use and goals and decides together with you whether Ozempic, or a different medication, is medically responsible.
3. Prescription and home delivery. If medication is appropriate, the doctor writes the prescription. A registered Dutch pharmacy delivers the medication chilled to your home. So you don't need to go to a pharmacy counter.
4. Losing weight with supervision. You start on a low dosing schedule and have a follow-up with the same doctor every 4 weeks. This way the dose is built up safely and you can always ask questions. This is the core of medical weight loss with injections the way we do it.

Most people notice the first effect after about 4 weeks: the constant feeling of hunger decreases, which suddenly makes eating less sustainable. If you want to pause or stop, you discuss that with the doctor.

What is Ozempic (semaglutide) and what is it registered for?

Ozempic is an injection pen with the active substance semaglutide, officially registered for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide mimics the gut hormone GLP-1. It regulates blood sugar levels, slows gastric emptying and suppresses the feeling of hunger. That last effect explains why the medication is also used for weight loss.

In practice you notice this mainly in your head, not just in your stomach. The constant thoughts about food quieten down, you feel full sooner and snacking moments lose their grip. Exactly the part where willpower alone often fails, especially if you've been struggling with your weight for years.

To be clear: Ozempic is therefore not an official weight loss medication. For weight management there is a separate registration of the same substance under the brand name Wegovy, at a higher dose. A doctor can assess for each situation which GLP-1 medication is medically appropriate. That is exactly why the consultation is not a formality, but the basis of a responsible treatment.

The effect of semaglutide on weight has been well researched. In a large study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, adults with overweight or obesity taking weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight in 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. Both groups also received lifestyle support. Results vary from person to person, and medication always works in combination with diet and exercise.

Key point: semaglutide is a serious medicine with a proven effect on weight, which belongs in a medical treatment, not in a shopping basket.

How much does Ozempic cost per month?

In the Netherlands, GLP-1 medication for weight loss is generally not reimbursed by your health insurer; reimbursement of semaglutide is subject to strict conditions and goes through your own doctor and insurer. Ozempic is not the only medication within medical weight loss, and by no means always the best choice. During the consultation, the doctor looks at which medication suits your health, your goals and any previous experience with medication.

Side effects and safety

Ozempic can cause side effects, especially in the first weeks and when the dose is increased. According to Apotheek.nl (the patient information website of Dutch pharmacists), the most common complaints are nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. These usually disappear within a few weeks, as your body gets used to the medication.

Less common are headache, fatigue and low blood sugar. Rare but serious side effects include pancreatitis and gallstones. If you have persistent or severe symptoms, always contact your doctor.

How to use and store the Ozempic pen

You inject Ozempic yourself once a week, just under the skin of your abdomen, thigh or upper arm. The needles are thin and the pen is designed for home use; the doctor explains exactly how it works when you start. Choose a fixed day of the week, which makes it easier to keep up.

Storage needs care. Unopened pens belong in the fridge, not in the freezer compartment. A pen you have started using keeps for a few more weeks after that; the exact period and temperature are in the official patient information leaflet. This is another advantage of the legal route: the pharmacy delivers chilled to your home, so the medication doesn't lose its effectiveness in transit.
