Ozempic price per dose at the pharmacy

The official pharmacy price of Ozempic rises with the dose: from €105.59 for the starter pen to €184.34 for the strongest pen. The active substance is semaglutide. You start with 0.25 mg per week and build up step by step under the supervision of a doctor.

These amounts come from the cost overview of the Farmacotherapeutisch Kompas (the Dutch national drug formulary), published by Zorginstituut Nederland (the Dutch National Health Care Institute). The prices include VAT and exclude the pharmacy's dispensing fee. In practice your total will therefore be slightly higher: pharmacies charge separate fees for processing the prescription and sometimes for delivery. Seeing very different amounts online? That's because many websites mix up clinic rates, foreign prices and bare pharmacy prices. So use the official price database as your starting point and add your own pharmacy costs to it.

Key point: the Ozempic price at the pharmacy is virtually uniform nationwide and depends mainly on your dose. The big differences only arise with the question of who pays: you or your health insurance.

Is Ozempic covered by your health insurance?

Ozempic is only reimbursed from basic health insurance if you have type 2 diabetes and meet strict conditions. In short: your BMI is 30 or higher and your blood sugar is not sufficiently under control with the usual diabetes medicines. Your doctor assesses whether you meet these conditions. The reimbursement does fall under your compulsory deductible (eigen risico) of €385 per year.

If you want to use Ozempic to lose weight, no health insurer reimburses the costs. That's because in the Netherlands the medicine is only registered for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. This also applies to reimbursement of Ozempic with Zilveren Kruis: the rules come from the national medicines reimbursement system (geneesmiddelenvergoedingssysteem) and are the same with every insurer. Switching health insurance therefore changes nothing here.

Ozempic costs per year if you pay yourself

Paying for a year of Ozempic yourself costs about €1,375 to €2,400 in medication, depending on your dose. The calculation: a year has 13 periods of four weeks, so you need 13 pens.

• 0.25 or 0.5 mg: 13 x €105.59 = approx. €1,375 per year
• 1 mg: 13 x €170.49 = approx. €2,215 per year
• 2 mg: 13 x €184.34 = approx. €2,395 per year

For a realistic annual budget, add two more items. First, the pharmacy costs for processing the prescription or delivery, which vary per pharmacy. Second, medical supervision: consultations, check-ups and being able to reach someone about side effects such as nausea or stomach complaints.

That last item is missing from most cost overviews online, while supervision is not an optional extra. Ozempic is a powerful medicine that calls for a doctor who keeps an eye on things: at the start, when building up the dose and as soon as you experience any problems. Can you get Ozempic through your GP?

Yes, but almost only for type 2 diabetes. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Ozempic is only available on prescription and is registered for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. GPs generally don't prescribe the medicine for weight loss, because that falls outside its official use.

Use without medical monitoring is also unwise, the CBG warns (the Medicines Evaluation Board, the Dutch medicines regulator). The inspectorate has previously closed web shops that sold the medicine illegally, and counterfeit pens have turned up in Europe that look like the original but may contain something else.
